FAQ'S
Q. What is the Springless Valve?
A.
1) It is the world's first commercially implemented engine valve control system that does not require valve springs in order to maintain opening or closing control of the valve-train.
2) It is a Desmodromic valve system that uses a round lobe on the camshaft and maintains continuous positive control of the vale. (See also questions 3 and 4.)
Q. What is the importance of a springless valve-train
A. Removing the spring from the valve system has numerous benefits including:
- Saving large amounts of horsepower that is normally wasted in operating the valve train that can instead be routed to the axle as additional power. Horsepower increases at standard operating conditions can range from 10% to as much as 40% depending on the engine design.
- With the Decuir system, the fuel efficiency increases by anywhere from 5% to 20% depending upon the engine type.
- It allows the engine to perform consistently at much higher RPM, as much as 50% higher than standard valve trains.
Q. What is a desmodromic valve system?
A. A desmodromic valve system is a system in which the valve and its operating components are all directly linked and therefore both the opening and closing of the valve are controlled exactly with exact timing and overlap.
Q. What is the importance of a desmodromic valve system.
A.
1) It allows the engine designer to establish exact timing and control of the opening and closing of the valve. This includes valve overlap, and maintaining the exact LCA profile.2) The engine may be operated to much higher RPM maintaining fuel efficiency
3) It virtually eliminates valve float because of the direct linkage
4) Similarly, it eliminates “bounce” in the valve that can cause reduced power
Q. How does the system work
A. The valve is directly coupled to the cam lobe through a rocker linkage system. The cam lobe is round with an eccentric positioning on the cam. This allows the designer to define any cam profile they choose while maintaining complete control of the valve, increasing fuel efficiency, and increasing the operating range of the engine.
Q. What is the importance of this system to me as:
- A consumer
- A parts manufacturer
- A Racing Enthusiast
- An OEM
A. For more information to the below answers, please contact J.R. Ybarra or Dusty Atwood at Decuir Engine Technologies at (760) 868-1310.
- Consumers will be able to increase the performance and fuel mileage of their engine. Consumers will be able to obtain the system for retrofit for their vehicles as manufacturing rights are licensed to performance part manufacturers.
- The system can be licensed for production for resale to performance minded customers, fleet operators, and the general public.
- Racing enthusiasts will be able to achieve much more efficient engine operation, including all of the above engine performance benefits, increase output power, and increase the operating range fo the engine.
- OEM’s will be able to design more efficiently operating engines to achieve the 2015 engine mileage and emission standard more quickly - possibly even immediately, while at the same time achieving greater engine output power.
Q. Is this system only for cars?
A. No. Today it is designed for standard Overhead CAM and standard push-rod engines for automobiles. This same design can be used in diesel engines for trucks, trains, ships, and any other form of internal combustion engine that uses a classical valve train.
Q. I'm interested in licensing the technology for production. How can I find out more about the system?
